Advanced Degree Key to Diagnostic Medical Sonography Advancement

Diagnostic Medical Sonography, like many other medical fields, is expected to be in high demand in coming years. That means job growth is likely to spike and certified practitioners will be in a leveraged spot when deciding where and under what terms to maintain employment.

But it could also mean that the job pool becomes crowded as the field takes in numerous new job seekers drawn by the promise held in an industry experiencing significant growth in an otherwise stagnant economy. To gain and keep employment, under this scenario, diagnostic medical sonography technicians will have to stand apart from the rest of the crowd.

The best way for a diagnostic medical sonographer to distinguish themselves in a crowded job market, is to seek out and acquire higher education degrees. The field of diagnostic medical sonography is already a skilled trade that requires at least two years of post-high school instruction with a preference for a four-year bachelor’s degree.
That means a sonographer could branch out to become a nurse or pursue a specialty or become a doctor if very motivated. But an often overlooked direction is that of business management. Because most diagnostic medical sonography practitioners stick closely to the medical side while leaving business aspects other career workers, there is a lack of broader understanding of the organization’s mission on both ends.

Anyone who can bridge that gap will be a proven asset to the organization who will have job security and considerable leverage when negotiating salary and advancement opportunities. Few other practitioners will have the essential business skills to adequately manage both functions and that opens the door wide for a diagnostic medical sonographer with a business management degree.

Before you can reap the benefits of business management experience, you must first pursue the degree. There are institutions that can accommodate a working schedule with evening classes or even Internet programs. In order to be accepted into any accredited business management degree program you will have to pass the GMAT pre-entry test.

The GMAT test is very similar to the SAT test that anyone who attended college for a bachelor’s degree will be familiar with from years past. If you’ve been out of school for a while and feel intimidated by the prospect of a pre-entry exam, consider the various GMAT prep courses that are available for additional assistance.
Make no mistake; pursuing a business management degree will require commitment and fortitude to succeed. But the benefits far outweigh the sacrifices in the long run.

Observations Concerning Diagnostic Medical Sonography Training

Program Types

Diagnostic medical sonography, also known as diagnostic ultrasound is a medical career that can provide a fairly good living without needing too much preliminary educational commitment. Sonographers must have a medical background, but nowhere near as much medical training as would be required for, say, a doctor or even a nurse. For this reason it is an attractive field for many people interested in health fields but who don’t have extensive financial or time resources to take up.
There are a number of different options for diagnostic medical sonography training and education. The following are a few:

Certificate/Diploma Programs

Certificate/diploma programs are usually a year or so in length. They cover the basics but don’t go as in depth as longer term degree programs. Often an employer will hire someone who has completed a diploma program for an entry level or even relatively highly qualified position. The advantage of these programs over other types of programs is that they do not require as much of a time commitment and someone can get to working in the field more quickly.

Associate Degree Programs

2 year Associate degree programs are a common education route in the field. They go a bit more in depth into such topics as anatomy and physiology as well as the technical aspects of the field and the administrative aspects as well. They qualify individuals for a variety of medical sonography positions.

Bachelor’s Degree Programs

Though less common, some schools do offer Bachelor’s degree programs in the field of diagnostic medical sonography. These programs may also cover other aspects of ultrasound or medical imaging in general.

Diagnostic Medical Sonography Schools

The types of programs mentioned above are offered at a variety of different educational institutions. These include community/junior colleges, 4 year colleges, career schools, technical schools, hospitals, and military based training establishments.

Is Free Diagnostic Medical Sonography Education/Training an Option?

It may prove difficult to find sonography training that is free of charge. Hospital based programs may allow you to get paid while training, but the likelihood is that they will charge fairly sizeable tuitions as well. You can, of course, read up on and study diagnostic medical sonography on your own, as with any other subject. While requirements to become employed do not include any legal stipulation making it necessary to get educated or certified before hand, employers generally expect an individual to have training before being hired. So while it is certainly possible to educate yourself in a background sense to a large degree in the field, you probably shouldn’t expect that to be enough to get you employed.

Choose the option that works for you as regards diagnostic medical sonography training. You have a certain amount of freedom to streamline your education since there are few legal requirements as regards employment. You will however need to get trained in order to have the reasonable expectation at being hired for a good job. So plan accordingly and find a program that offers quality education, that you can afford, and that works well in a practical sense.

How to Evaluate Online Diagnostic Medical Sonography Training Programs

Online training programs in diagnostic medical sonography seem an attractive option for people in various situations that make going to school in the ordinary sense somewhat difficult. For instance, someone may live in a remote rural location that is far from the campuses of schools that offer training programs in which they are interested. Or they may not have a vehicle, have other obligations such as work that take up too much of their time to make regular classroom attendance realistic, or have some kind of physical problem making mobility difficult. For these people online diagnostic medical sonography programs, also known as distance learning programs, can be a convenient option. Though one can’t train completely in sonography online – the practical training at a medical facility is a big part of the process – internet based distance learning programs can take the place of most classroom instruction.

Before embarking on a diagnostic medical sonography training program, an individual should bear in mind that an extra degree of caution and circumspection is required. It is quite easy for charlatans and shoddy programs to bill themselves as reputable ones in the web environment. Just a quick look around some forums and review sites will serve to show you both the good and bad concerning these programs. Many people have been ripped off by online education that is primarily profit driven, is deceptive, or is even outright fraudulent. Reputable online diagnostic medical sonography training programs do however exist. The following are some ways that you can evaluate the worth and reputability of web based educational programs in this field.

Accreditation

Possibly one of the most trustworthy ways to evaluate diagnostic medical sonography training programs is to find out whether they have accreditation. The primary and most respected accrediting organization for this profession and a number of others in the allied health field is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Many employers actually look for graduates of these types of programs. You will find that many online programs are not CAAHEP accredited. So if you can find one that is, you’re doing well. There is a valuable resource here that you can access. The CAAHEP website, which is at http://www.caahep.org/default.aspx, has a search tool that allows you to search programs in diagnostic medical sonography that they have accredited.

There are only 4 such on programs in the US listed by CAAHEP, which shows you how relatively infrequent it is for CAAHEP to accredit such programs. But if one of these 4 programs work for you, you can be pretty sure it is reputable. Considering getting to and from the school is not an issue since the instruction will be done online, it is quite possible that you can attend one of these institutions.

Some of these schools may have accreditations by other organizations, and probably some accreditation is better than none. But as noted above, accreditation by CAAHEP is the surest bet.

Check Out Review Sites

Another good way to check out a school that you are considering is to read over review sites that are unbiased and user based. Read reviews by people who have actually attended, or are attending, online programs that you are considering. These sites can give you an honest view of the real experiences of students, rather than the sales pitch that the website’s literature gives you.

Talk to Instructors and Administrators

It is a good idea to talk to instructors and administrative staff at the online school you are considering. If all you get are “customer service” people when you try to call the school, that’s not so good. Many of these online schools have a corporate type mentality and while that doesn’t always go along with poor educational standards, it tends to. Talking to actual staff at a school at least gives you a sense of what types of people they are and that they are open enough to answer questions.

The Better Business Bureau

You can even check with the Better Business Bureau in the state in which the school is based to see if there are any complaints about these companies. This organization can be accessed online and can give valuable information about a school’s record.
